BMD

Bone health plays a vital role in your overall wellbeing—especially as you age. A Bone Mineral Densitometry (BMD) scan is a fast, painless and highly accurate way to measure bone density. It’s most commonly used to detect osteopenia or osteoporosis, conditions that cause bones to weaken and increase the risk of fractures.

Early detection means early intervention. Whether it’s for general screening, monitoring the effects of medication, or assessing risk after long-term steroid use, a BMD scan helps your doctor make informed decisions about your bone health and treatment plan.

We offer same day BMD appointments at our Sydney Adventist Hospital location.

A tissue marker is a very small object that is inserted into the breast either at the time of a biopsy, or to mark a previously diagnosed abnormality. There are a number of different types of markers available and the radiologist uses the marker clip most suitable for your particular requirements. There are different materials used in the various markers that are available and the markers come in a variety of shapes. Different shapes are useful if there are multiple areas to be marked in the same breast.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why might I need a BMD scan?

Your doctor may refer you for a BMD scan if:

  • You’re post-menopausal or over 70
  • You’ve had a fracture after a minor injury
  • You’re starting or currently taking corticosteroids long term
  • You have a condition that affects bone health (e.g. rheumatoid arthritis)
  • You’re being monitored for response to osteoporosis treatment

What happens during the scan?

A BMD scan uses a low-dose X-ray to examine areas like your hips and spine. You’ll lie on a padded table while the scanner passes over your body—there’s no discomfort, and the test takes about 15–30 minutes. Our team will guide you every step of the way.

Is the scan covered by Medicare?

Medicare rebates are available for some BMD scans based on your age, medical history, previous BMD scan or treatment status. We’ll let you know if your scan qualifies and explain any out-of-pocket costs before your appointment.
